In an ideal world, you should be able to optimize your writing process by using the best tools available. Luckily, we are in a near-ideal world when it comes to AI copywriting :)
If you're looking for a no-frills writing tool that can help you write more while refining your punctuation, grammar and style, ProWritingAid is one of the top choices.
I've looked at 100+ online reviews for ProWritingAid and consulted several writers who use ProWritingAid to provide the most authentic review on ProWritingAid. So read on if you want to learn precisely what ProWritingAid is and how it works.
And, I've also listed top alternatives that might work for you, if you're not happy with ProWritingAid.
What is ProWritingAid?
ProWritingAid is your personal grammar guru, style editor and writing mentor in one package. It comes with an AI-based content generator that can help you write faster by offering ways to improve any text, from blog posts to manuscripts.
ProWritingAid online editor highlights common errors so you can become a better writer by eliminating mistakes. The tool analyzes your text and highlights various key writing issues, such as overused words, sentence length variation, and potential passive voice errors.
You can access ProWritingAid from the web or download a desktop version. It's not just for your browser - you can use it with Microsoft Word, Google Docs, and several other word processing tools, including Open Office and Scrivener.
Detailed Review of ProWritingAid features
Here's a feature-by-feature review of ProWritingAid:
1. Review of ProWritingAid's Grammatical accuracy
The grammar checking tool in ProWritingAid is very robust. And, it is very similar to popular word processing programs! ProWritingAid's grammar checker includes many options for fixing critical grammar errors, such as:
- Subject/Verb agreement
- Possessive nouns not followed by a gerund form of a verb
- Unclear pronoun references
2. Review of ProWritingAid's Writing style enhancement
A writer's style relies heavily on the choice of their words. The ProWritingAid Word Explorer feature will analyze your text and highlight potential issues from overused words to abstract language, passive voice, punctuation problems and more.
You can also check how you use different word lengths, sentence lengths, transitions (words like "however" or "moreover" that introduce a new point), pronouns and articles (a/an/the), and filler words.
ProWritingAid flags overused words in blue so that you can see them easily wherever they occur in your text.
3. Plagiarism checking tool
ProWritingAid's plagiarism checker allows you to check your text against a database of billions of web pages. You can check up to 2000 words for free and get detailed results with links to the original sources within seconds. You can also use the premium plagiarism checking service by choosing one of the below-mentioned plans.
ProWritingAid offers a free version that allows you to perform 25 checks per month. If you exceed the free usage, ProWritingAid will prompt you to pay for a subscription, starting at $40/year.
A check is one use of any type of analysis in the program. Several types of analysis are included in the toolbox and can be performed on the same document: grammar, style, plagiarism, readability and more.
So, for example, if you run two different kinds of analysis at once (say spelling and grammar), that would count as two checks. But if you ran spelling, then ran grammar next without restarting your document from scratch (which does not count as another check), it would only count as one check because you were using the same file for both analyses. So, most users will have no problem completing their monthly quota with ease!
4. Integration with other applications
The free version of Pro Writing Aid gives you access to the MS Word and Google Docs integrations, which is fantastic for anyone who edits on those platforms. It allows you to check your writing with a single click and take advantage of other features such as contextual thesaurus and vocabulary builder. The only downside? You can only edit texts up to 20,000 words per session, and you're also limited to checking 25 documents per month :(
Premium-plan users can also integrate ProWritingAid with Scrivener, Open Office, a Google Chrome extension, and MS Outlook. There is even an HTML editor option for integrating the program with online platforms like WordPress, Medium, or Gmail.
5. Writing Reports
ProWritingAid examines your writing and suggests ways to enhance it. Each report concentrates on a different aspect of your writing. Some reports include fast adjustments that will help you polish a short bit of writing. Other reports will deep-dive into details and point out places where you can enhance your writing style.
While ProWritingAid will not perform your work for you, it will make it easier for you. As you use the reports, you'll improve your writing style since you'll become more conscious of the errors you make, much like having a real-life writing coach helping you. You'll have to apply your own judgment because not every tip will work for every writer.
Review of ProWritingAid Cons
While I believe it can be a valuable AI copywriting tool for most authors, I would be remiss if I did not mention its drawbacks in my ProWritingAid review.
- Microsoft Word does not have a Mac integration (this is a major bummer for Mac users like me).
- Offline use is not possible with the desktop version.
- Suggestions for style felt rigid and punitive.
- The free edition has a word restriction of 500 characters.
- You may sometimes feel depressed with the readability score :(

Review of ProWritingAid Pricing and Plans
The ProWritingAid monthly subscription costs $20 for the Standard version and $34 for the Premium one. The Chrome extension costs $20 for either package. The price of an annual subscription to the ProWritingAid web editor is $59 per year or $66 for the premium version. If you are a student or teacher, you can get 20% off any annual subscription plan.

Review of ProWritingAid Alternatives
ProWritingAid is a good tool but it's definitely not for everyone.
If you don't like it, I recently created a detailed analysis of top ProWritingAid alternatives and competitors. You must read this!
I am listing some of the common alternatives here as well:
Grammarly is a writing and proofreading application that finds errors. These errors include not only punctuation problems but also syntactic and grammatical faults. Look at the instructions for fixing each issue you encounter.
Grammarly aggressively checks spellings and then compares the content with web results for plagiarism. This was one of the top features that impressed me. Grammarly also provides editing assistance in the form of writing style guidance.
Jasper, formerly Jarvis and conversion.ai, is a popular AI copywriting software that allows copywriters, authors, and content writers to use AI-based word generating tools to speed up the writing process. With good reviews, Jasper is one of the most popular writing helper programmes.
INK or INK for all
'INK for all' is a platform that uses artificial intelligence to create and modify content for social media, business, marketing, sales, and even personal projects. Both content writers and SEO professionals will find it useful. Using this AI writing helper, you can automatically generate a copy and adjust it for search engine compatibility.
ProWritingAid is considered to be an Outranking competitor
Good writing is a skill that can be learned, and as is true with any area of learning, improvement comes from practice.
ProWritingAid will help you identify opportunities for improvement so that you can self-edit your work and write better! So, when you give your work to an editor before publication, they won't have their red pen out for every single sentence :)
The lack of Mac compatibility is a serious flaw. Many writers use Mac devices for their work, and it's disappointing that ProWritingAid couldn't make it work. Despite these limitations, I still highly recommend this tool as a good starting point for writers on a budget who don't want to compromise their work's quality.
The inability of the desktop app to function offline isn't so surprising – Grammarly has the same limitation.
FAQs around ProWritingAid Review
1. What languages does ProWritingAid support?
Ans: ProWritingAid is currently only accessible in English. ProWritingAid may be accessible in more languages in the future. General English, British English, US English, Australian English, and Canadian English all have different settings. By adjusting your account settings, you can select which version you desire.
2. Can I use ProWritingAid when I'm not connected to the internet?
Ans: Unfortunately, because all of their integrations require an internet connection to function, there is no offline access to ProWritingAid. This is because they have a lot of high-powered reports that need to communicate with servers to work.
